EU Flag
Lisbon, Portugal, 2020–present
This work presents a European flag made from steel fencing and barbed wire. The materials evoke the physical barriers migrants face when trying to enter Europe and the inhumane conditions they endure while waiting in refugee camps. Despite the harsh reality it explores, the work also conveys the hope asylum seekers carry with them.
The open structure allows the sky to remain visible through the flag, creating a sense of openness and possibility. Installed beside the river that flows toward the ocean, the work also alludes to the sea journeys many migrants undertake in search of a better life.
